Leadership: The Free-Range Human’s Path to True Leadership

Leadership is tough—whether we acknowledge it or not. But here’s the truth: we are leading every single day. Every moment, every decision, every challenge—we are leading. Even when no one is behind us, we are still leading ourselves.
The Storm That Revealed A True Leader
Last year, I led a Boys to Men expedition—guiding 15 boys through a rugged, unforgiving landscape. It wasn’t just a test for them; it was a test for me as well.
On day one, I observed them. First impressions led me to believe I could pinpoint the natural leaders—the strong ones—and the ones who would simply follow. But by the end of the journey, those assumptions shattered.
The boys I thought would be leaders? They struggled.
The ones I assumed would follow? They rose.
Why? Because leadership isn’t about height, age, boldness, or physicality. It’s about who can lead themselves first.
By day four, the mountains decided to test us. A brutal storm was approaching—scheduled to hit at 11 AM.
We planned to move early, hoping to clear a peak before the storm arrived. But we started late. By the time we reached the summit, the storm was already upon us.
The wind? Merciless.
The rain? Unforgiving.
The cold? Bone-chilling.
We found some shelter between the rocks, but the wind cut through the cracks like blades. And here’s the danger: when you're soaked to the skin in freezing temperatures, stopping means hypothermia. The only way to survive is to keep moving.
Some of the boys wanted to stop. Some wanted to push forward. I gathered them and laid it out plainly:
"We have two choices: stay here and freeze, or move forward and push through together."
Now, here’s where it gets interesting.
Each day, I had assigned a different leader. And on this day, leadership fell to a boy no one expected to lead.
But in that moment, something shifted.
He stood up. Soaked. Shivering. Barely holding himself together.
And then he said something that changed everything:
"If we can get through this storm, we can get through anything."
That was it. No fancy speech. No long-winded motivation. Just conviction.
Three days earlier, nobody had respected him as a leader. But in the middle of that storm—when it mattered the most—he chose to lead himself first.
And when he did, the others followed.
We moved through two and a half hours of brutal wind and rain. By 3 PM, the storm had passed. The sun broke through, warming our faces, drying our soaked clothes. And from that moment on, he had their respect—not because someone gave it to him, but because he took it.
He led himself, and leadership followed.
I know this firsthand.
For years, I followed the script society had written for me—employment, security, a path that was safe. I lived within the limits of what was expected, but deep down, I knew I was meant for something more. I felt the pull of the unknown, the longing for a life that wasn’t dictated by convention but by my own intention.
And so, I made a choice.
I led myself into the unknown.
I stepped away from the predictable path and into an uncertain, yet deeply fulfilling, journey—a Free-Range Human life. I walked away from the illusion of security, transcended the limiting beliefs about what I could and couldn’t do, and embraced a new reality. One where I lived intentionally, on my own terms.
And I learned that the greatest adventure isn’t just found in the mountains—it’s in breaking free from the cages we build for ourselves.
But it wasn’t easy.
The doubts were relentless.
The resistance was real.
The fears whispered constantly: What if you fail? What if you're not enough? What if this was all a mistake?
But leadership isn’t about having all the answers—it’s about having the courage to step forward anyway.
The Core of Leadership
Leadership isn’t about impressing others. It’s about impressing yourself. It’s about mastering your own mind, conquering your inner battles, and pushing through self-doubt. It’s about breaking past the resistance within.
Every day, we stand at a crossroads: we either lead ourselves toward destruction or toward growth and prosperity. There is no neutral ground. And here’s the hard truth—if you can’t lead yourself, you’ll never be able to lead anyone else.
It’s not about commanding people.
It’s not about demanding respect.
It’s not about looking like a leader.
It’s about leading yourself first—conquering your own fears, your own doubts, your own struggles. Because when you lead yourself, others will naturally follow.
I saw it in the mountains. I saw it in that storm. And I saw it in my own life.
I didn’t wait for permission to step into the unknown. I led myself first, and in doing so, others began to follow. That’s the Free-Range Human way.
You don’t need to delegate.
You don’t need to instruct.
You don’t need to ask for attention.
You just need to lead yourself through the storm. Because when you prove to yourself that you can stand, that you can push forward, that you can overcome—the world takes notice. People gravitate toward true leadership.
So, remember this:
Conquer your mind.
Lead yourself first.
Step into the unknown.
Pick yourself up when you fall.
Because once you do, you won’t need to ask people to follow you.
They will. That’s leadership. That’s the Free-Range Human way.
